While Apple’s versions iOS 12 and newer are believed to be hack-proof, one user didn’t feel as safe as he was supposed to be after making the upgrade.
On Tuesday, Twitter user Rahel Mohamad wrote in to Apple’s Support account to relay a shocking occurrence that took place after he had installed iOS 12.1 in his iPhone X.
“[My] iPhone X just got hot and exploded in the process of upgrading to [iOS 12.1]. What’s going on here?” the iPhone owner asked.
To support his statement, the user also shared some photos revealing a shattered iPhone X with a hollowed-out interior.
He elaborated to tech blog Gadgets360 that the iPhone was purchased in January this year, and that he had “been using it normally.”
Towards the end of the download, Mohamad said that the device started spewing “dark gray smoke.” The update saw completion, “and as soon as the phone turned on, it started to smoke and caught fire.”
He added that he had been using an official Apple Lightning cable and wall adapter at that time, but unplugged the gadget because it got “very hot… I [dropped] the phone immediately.”
Apple responded to Mohamad’s tweet, saying that, “That’s definitely not expected behavior. DM us, so we can look into this with you.” That’s, erm, reassuring.
According to the user, the company later requested that he ship the handset over so that its support team could investigate the matter.
