Following the departure of British fashion designer Phoebe Philo from Céline, the French luxury brand appointed ex-Yves Saint Laurent designer Hedi Slimane as its artistic, creative and image director earlier this year.
Now, the label has unveiled its new logo design by Slimane that is “directly inspired by the original, historical” branding from the 1960s.
Most evidently, the accent on the ‘e’ has been dropped to mirror the brand’s collections from the 60s, which frequently left out the accent. According to the brand, this creates a touch of simplicity and a more “balanced proportion” to the look.
There’s also a subtle change in the logomark’s typography; Celine replaced its bespoke ‘Semplicità’-derived typeface with a modernist version that dates back to the 1930s. Additionally, the letterforms have been brought closer together.
The revamped logo will make its way across Celine’s clothing, boxes and campaigns, with the addition of the ‘Paris’ text from the 1960s branding being revived on its products and packaging.
Only time will tell if the switch is permanent or part of an upcoming campaign. What’s your take on this sleek rewind?
THE NEW LOGO HAS BEEN DIRECTLY INSPIRED BY THE ORIGINAL, HISTORICAL, VERSION THAT EXISTED IN THE 1960’S.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ THE MODERNIST TYPOGRAPHY USED DATES FROM THE 1930’S. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ THE ACCENT ON THE “E” HAS BEEN REMOVED TO ENABLE A SIMPLIFIED AND MORE BALANCED PROPORTION, EVOKING THE CELINE COLLECTIONS OF THE 1960’S WHERE THE ACCENT WASN’T USED OFTEN. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ THE SPACING BETWEEN THE LETTERS HAS BEEN BALANCED OUT AND THE LETTERS HAVE BEEN BROUGHT CLOSER TOGETHER. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ THE 1960’S VERSION OF THE LOGO INCLUDING THE WORD “PARIS”, WILL BE REINSTATED WITHIN THE CLOTHING AND ON PACKAGING, HOWEVER “PARIS" WILL NOT APPEAR BENEATH THE LOGO ON CAMPAIGNS. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #CELINEBYHEDISLIMANE
