If you think you’ve seen just about every genre of optical illusion out there, here’s a fresh one to trip you out.
A Canadian teacher known as ‘SlipperyPockets’ on Reddit recounted that they had sketched outlines for of paper poppies to be cut out by their class. To the teacher’s surprise, they had accidentally invented a visual illusion.
“I drew poppy outlines for my class to cut out—they look like they overlap but don’t,” the user said, sharing a photograph of the trippy result.
True enough, the outlines seem to cross over one another when you glance at the picture as a whole. When you look at the “poppies” individually, though, you’ll realize they’re all unconnected from each other.
Some users deduced that the illusion was formed as a result of a phenomenon known as ‘Gestalt Continuity Law’, where the brain conjures up lines of objects that are grouped together.
